Avast! Ye land lubbers. One more time around the world I say!

So, you may have noticed that all the recent songs are old ones.

I've been going through old song books and picking out songs that I always wanted to record, but never had the chance.

I've been wanting to hear these tracks completed for years. This one, for example is the best side of twenty years old.

The track is One more time around the world.

Okay, so first of all I am a great fan of XTC, the vastly underrated British band of the 70's and on. They are quintessentially English for a start, which is always good. They have a phenomenal bassist in Colin Moulding. You could quite happily sit and listen to just Molding's bass on it's own on most tracks, as far as I am concerned. Additionally he is an excellent songwriter in his own right. Listen to Sacrificial Bonfire on Skylarking.

Then you have Dave Gregory (later) who is just so stupidly versatile on guitar that it makes you vomit. The guy can just play anything. Have a listen to The Dukes Of Stratosphere's (XTC in disguise) album to hear him recapturing the sounds of 60s psychedelia.

And then there is Andy Partridge. Partridge is a massively underrated songwriter, probably one of English pop's finest. For me, easily up there with someone like McCartney or Davies. His topics and word play are out of this world and he has a way of capturing images in a quirky English way and in a way no one else can. Listen to 1000 Umbrellas on Skylarking or Your Dictionary on Apple Venus vol one, it is truly heart wrenching.

I could harp on about Partridge for days.

I always loved the lyric: "people will always be tempted to wipe their feet on anything with welcome written on it!" Just....urhhgg!

So, there is a great deal of XTC in the things I do, if not in the sound then in the lyrics.

This song is a case in point. It uses the image of the sailor at sea, sailing the world whilst he waits for the lady of his desires to return his affections.

As I remember, and is usually the case, it became clear that that was the theme- the sea. From then on the lyrics tend to write themselves. My brain starts coming up with nautical images; the dark sea, the depths, the waves, the seagulls, deep sea creatures, treasure maps- You know!

It was also clear that it should sound as if it were on a ship, old and wooden and creaking. The sea should be lapping against the hull. And onboard someone is playing an accordion in the hold on a hammock as the ship rocks back and forth.

The song plays with images and ideas of the sea. I seem to do a fair bit of sea stuff in songs. This is possibly due to my being a Brit first of all, you are never far from the sea!

As well as this, I am from the port of Liverpool. The sea, or rather the river leading out to the Irish sea, is ever present.

On New Years, in the old days, there were no fireworks. Instead, the boats on the river used to sound their horns, which echoed across the waters to the land. A haunting sound indeed. And even now, I really miss the sound of gulls (bastards that they maybe) where I am. It is something I truly enjoy when I am home again.

So the song should have the quality of a sea shanty of sorts. I think, and I hope, I captured that well in the song.

The recording was a hard one because the timing keep changing form 4/4 to 3/4. I am very analogue in my way of recording. Proper technicians would have a fucking field day watching me record a song! But it gets me there so....whatever sails your boat!

I loved doing all the effect bits and I am quite proud of the sailors singing LOVE! Hu! Ha!

That was already there as I wrote the song. I knew I wanted that sound in there 20 years ago and it turned out well. I don't take myself too seriously, so when I am doing something like that I am laughing out loud sometimes, not on the recording of course. I do this when I write books too. If I write a gag in the story, I can quite happily sit there and laugh my socks off even though I know the punchline. In this respect I am like my father, he could laugh for hours at his own jokes!!

So, there it is- One more time around the world. A lost sailors heartache!

The "video" is just stupid photos of me again. But at least I made the effort to do it in pirate style. Anyway, it's the music that counts.

Lyrics

One more time around the world.

She doesn't want me. She says I'll have to wait.

She isn't ready. She tells me maybe later... when the tide has turned

and the waves stop breaking. And the albatross stops his trawler chasing.

One more time around the world, I'll keep on sailing.

One more time until the girl's finished meditating.

I haven't had no news a thousand moons or more.

And only in my dreams have I seen coast or shore.

Now I've hit dry land and my heart's been waiting for my lady's word.

Still I'm navigating...

One more time around the world, I'll keep on going.

One more time until the girl's capable of showing love.

Love, deeper than the ocean.

Showing love, stronger than the tide.

Showing love like a crew's devotion.

Showing love much too big to hide!

One more time around the world, I'll keep on sailing.

One more time until the girl's finished meditating.

One more time, One more time around the world.

One more time, One more time around the world.

One more time, One more time around the world.

One more time around the world.

One more time until the girl's capable of showing love.
