The saddest globe, of course, refers to our earth. I used the famous pale blue dot picture (thanks to NASA) as it perfectly depicts our situation and the senselessness of our actions.
We sit in the vastness of a cosmos unimaginably huge (possibly infinite) and have nothing better to do than to cause misery for our own and other species.
If you haven't heard Carl Sagan's speech that goes along with the pale blue dot you really should.
We are, as someone described us, as monkey's with laptops. For all of our intelligence, and capacity for empathy and compassion, we are a rather sad and stupid species.
The song, as you can tell, is not exactly overflowing with great optimism.
But that is the way I, and I think we all, at some point feel about our species.
There is much room for improvement, but there is also a great capacity for greed, hatred and tribalism.
The opening lines call out to a potential alien race, waning them not to come near us. The rest is a description to them why it would be prudent o keep their distance, unless they have a cure which involves getting rid of us entirely.
It is when I have reached the end of my tether with humanity, that I come up with a song like this. I, by no means, think like this all the time, but there is no denying the truth, unfortunately, in the lyrics.
The lyrics, by the way, are on the screen.
The song itself is another older one, written probably 15 years ago or more.
I tried to get a Colin Moulding like bass going at the end. I failed, of course, how could you ever get that beautiful Moulding feel unless you are Colin Moulding (an unsung musical hero for many, as are XTC generally!!).
The rest of the song is quite spartan, relying only on a limited acoustic guitar, the bass and vocals.
The trumpet at the end is me faking it again. I'd have loved to have a real trumpet player play on the track, but needs must when the Devil vomits on your bedspread, as Black Adder so wisely said.
Have a great start to the week and be nice to each other here on the saddest globe!!!

Lyrics
The Saddest Globe
Are you receiving me out there?
Please keep your distance, don't come near.
There's nothing we can offer.
We are all deaf, blind xenophobes here on the saddest globe.
We have advanced from thickest mud
(we've hardly grown at all it the truth be known)
To bullies of the neighbourhood
(you can thank our lack of science that we've stayed at home).
Our wars are legendary.
We stand on soil of powdered bones here on the saddest globe.
This lonely island in space where my memories lie.
This shining jewel in a sea full of dark.
This lowly, castaway race watches time go by.
This cold and fragile little ark.
If you've a cure to heal our ills
(deliver us from hate here on the saddest globe)
make sure you have a cure that kills
(relieve us from our fate here on the saddest globe)
Please forgive my bleakness
It's just a human weakness.
I know I don't sound hopeful
It comes from being so alone here on the saddest globe.
